When to Ship Inventory to Europe for Black Friday and Christmas

Ship early enough that your stock is sellable in the EU – cleared through customs, received, checked and live in your store – before your Black Friday campaign starts, not on the day. Work backwards from that date: subtract receiving, customs clearance, weeks by sea and production, then add a buffer.

In short

  • Work backwards from the day your stock must be sellable in the EU: cleared, received, barcode-registered and live in your store before your Black Friday campaign starts.
  • In 2026, Black Friday is Friday 27 November and Cyber Monday is Monday 30 November, while Sweden, Denmark and Finland celebrate Christmas – presents included – on Christmas Eve, 24 December.
  • Ocean freight takes weeks by sea, and customs clearance and receiving add time on top, so ask your forwarder, customs agent and 3PL for this year's lead times.
  • Keep a buffer: early stock costs storage, but late stock costs the campaign.
  • EU consumers generally have 14 days from delivery to withdraw from an online purchase, so orders delivered in late December still come back in January.

If you sell from the US, Canada, Australia or the UK, fast peak-season delivery to EU customers starts with stock already in Europe. Once it is cleared into the EU, orders reach customers across the EU with no customs on the way – the idea behind EU fulfillment for brands outside the EU. The catch is lead time. Stock still at sea on Black Friday can't be sold that weekend.

When should you ship inventory to Europe for Black Friday?

Early enough that the stock is sellable in the EU before your campaign starts – and you find that date by working backwards. Start from the day your Black Friday offers go live, then subtract each step in reverse order:

  1. Buffer – room for a late vessel, a customs query or a recount. How much is your call.
  2. Receiving and registration – the warehouse counts, checks and registers your stock before it can be sold. Ask your 3PL.
  3. Customs clearance – your customs agent lodges the import declaration when the goods arrive. Ask your customs agent.
  4. Transport – weeks by sea, plus handling at both ends. Ask your forwarder.
  5. Production and packing – including EU labels and cartons packed to your 3PL's requirements. Ask your supplier.

That gives you the last day your goods can leave the supplier. Already past it? Ask your forwarder about faster options for your bestsellers, or build your EU campaign around Christmas.

Planning timeline for EU peak season inventory: the 2026 peak dates, the deadline for stock to be sellable in the EU, and the steps to count back – buffer, receiving, customs clearance, transport, production and first-shipment roles – with who sets each lead time
Count back from the day your stock must be sellable. Every lead time in between comes from the people who run that step – ask them for this year's, not last year's.

What are the key peak-season dates in 2026?

Black Friday is Friday 27 November 2026 and Cyber Monday is Monday 30 November. For Christmas in the Nordics, the date that matters is 24 December, not the 25th.

Black Friday is the day after US Thanksgiving, which falls on Thursday 26 November this year. In Sweden, Denmark and Finland, Christmas is celebrated – and presents are opened – on Christmas Eve, so gifts for customers there need to arrive before the 24th.

From our warehouse in Gothenburg, parcels typically take 1–2 business days to the Nordic EU countries (Sweden, Denmark, Finland), 2–3 to Germany and Benelux and 3–5 to the rest of the EU. Those are typical times, not promises, so ask your 3PL for this year's last order dates for Christmas delivery, country by country.

What slows down inbound shipments in Q4?

The same steps as in any other quarter – transport, customs clearance and receiving – but with less slack, because many brands are shipping for the same peak.

  • Transport. Ocean freight takes weeks by sea, and a delay at either end pushes back everything after it. Ask your forwarder for current transit times and book early.
  • Customs clearance. It adds time on arrival, and more on a first shipment, when the agent, the power of attorney and your documents are all new. See freight forwarder vs customs broker for who does what. Your customs agent will also tell you whether your setup needs your own EORI number – see EORI numbers for non-EU businesses.
  • Receiving. Stock is counted, checked and registered before it can be sold. At Primepack, every SKU is barcode-registered in Ongoing WMS, with quality checks at receiving – clear carton labels and an accurate packing list speed this up.
  • First-time setup. On a first shipment, your customs agent and your EU responsible person for product safety must be in place before the goods ship, and your Swedish VAT registration should start early. Our overview of how EU fulfillment works lists the steps in order.

Then keep a buffer. Early stock costs storage – at Primepack, per pallet or shelf location per month. Late stock costs the campaign.

What happens to peak-season returns in January?

Some of them come back. EU consumers who buy online generally have 14 days to withdraw from a purchase without giving a reason, normally counted from the day they receive the goods – so orders delivered in late December can still be withdrawn from in January.

This is also the first peak season since EU countries had to apply the rules on an online withdrawal function, from 19 June 2026. Our guide to the EU withdrawal button follows a return from the click to the refund deadline. With stock in the EU, returns come back to an address inside the EU instead of crossing a customs border. At Primepack, they are received, inspected and restocked – see how EU returns handling works.

FAQ

When is Black Friday 2026?

Friday 27 November 2026, the day after US Thanksgiving. Cyber Monday is Monday 30 November.

Can I send a second shipment in December?

You can, but work backwards from Christmas Eve the same way. With weeks by sea plus clearance and receiving, a December top-up has to leave your supplier long before Christmas.

Do EU customers pay customs duty on orders shipped from EU stock?

No. Duty and import VAT are due when your bulk shipment is cleared. After that, orders to EU customers involve no customs, although VAT applies to each sale.
